Someone used this term, "Portfolio Career," to describe what I do for a living. I decided that it's a good fit. What does it mean? I think of it as being committed to living life in a way that nurtures me as well as those who receive my services. A satisfied worker brings joy to client relations and fresh perspective to each job. For me that means having a variety of different things to do—different "games to play".
It's not unusual these days for folks to make a career change for quality of life purposes. I've taken that a step further and let my interests grow without dropping my original professions, which I still enjoy as much as ever.
I like the way I get to relate to people when I'm cutting their hair—and playing with hair is fun! But there's the physical toll of standing on your feet all day in a salon where the air quality is compromised, so I do less of it in a cleaner environment. Then I practice and teach yoga to heal the aches and pains and as a natural outcropping of that, I teach my students to do the same. Bodywork follows the practice and teaching of Yoga. And the world of design presents itself through the need to create promotional materials for my Yoga studio.
It has been a wonderful and organic process, building a "portfolio career". The balance within my different modes of work brings me great joy as I work with people like you to make the world a healthier, more beautiful place.
